Nearly one-quarter of the United States Senate has penned a strongly worded letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressing deep concern over Canada’s defense spending levels. The bipartisan letter, signed by 23 senators, signifies a significant escalation of pressure from Washington on this long-standing issue. In the correspondence sent Thursday, the senators emphasized the current precarious state of NATO and urged Canada to fulfill its commitment to meet the alliance’s spending target at the upcoming summit. They underscored the importance of allies upholding their obligations, particularly in such turbulent times. The letter expressed disappointment over Canada’s proposed defense spending plan, which falls short of NATO’s 2 percent of GDP target. Additionally, the senators highlighted the urgent need for Canada to modernize its aerospace warning system in the Arctic to support the North American Aerospace Defense Command.
