In Turks and Caicos, a Virginia man named Tyler Wenrich avoided a lengthy prison term on Tuesday when a judge sentenced him to time served for illegally possessing bullets on the island.
Wenrich, aged 31, was fined $9,000 and received a sentence of three weeks already served, allowing him to return to Louisa, Virginia. Despite facing a possible 12-year prison sentence for the ammunition charge, Wenrich, who works as a paramedic and has an 18-month-old child, was deemed eligible for the shorter sentence due to “extraordinary circumstances,” as determined by the judge.
Wenrich’s case mirrored that of another American, Bryan Hagerich, who also faced a potential 12-year term before being released.
