The CDC has reported a concerning rise in cases of a virulent strain of mpox in central Africa and a recent uptick in U.S. cases. While the mpox vaccine seems to offer long-lasting protection, with two doses of the Jynneos vaccine being effective without the need for a booster currently, experts warn against complacency.

Despite overall low infection rates compared to the 2022 peak, recent increases, particularly in New York City, raise concerns. With the summer travel season approaching and LGBTQ Pride festivals ahead, there’s worry that increased social connectivity could facilitate mpox transmission. Public health officials stress the importance of ongoing vigilance and prevention efforts.
