The federal government has agreed to impose a modest $15 million fine on Norfolk Southern for the East Palestine, Ohio derailment last year.
Additionally, the railroad pledged over $300 million for safety improvements and addressing community health concerns. This settlement, hailed as historic by the EPA, includes reimbursement for response costs and funding for long-term healthcare and water monitoring.
Despite criticism from East Palestine residents, who believe the settlement is insufficient given the company’s profits, Norfolk Southern emphasizes its ongoing commitment to safety. The NTSB continues its investigation into the derailment’s cause, while a bill in Congress for further rail safety reforms remains stalled.
